Social work is a rewarding career for those interested in helping their fellow people. While it is not an easy or particularly well-paid path, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics foresees a 13 percent increased need for social workers in the next few years. 

What is a social worker?

A social worker is a professional who is trained to help people deal with difficult problems, including drug abuse, mental illness, and poverty. 

What does a social worker do?

Social workers typically work for government agencies and NGOs, non-governmental organizations, like non-profit organizations. They assess the client's needs and connect them to organizations that can help, from drug abuse counseling and rehab facilities to food pantries and employment training centers. The overarching goal of a social worker is to help their client improve their living situation. 

Most social workers are typically employed in direct practice, working with clients in schools, hospitals, and government agencies. Some social workers are employed in community practice working towards social change within the government. They work as legislative aides and public policy advocates in the legislative branch of state and federal government.

What education does a social worker need?

Social workers need both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree. While a graduate degree in social work (MSW) is required, the field of study for an undergraduate degree is wide-ranging. Prospective social workers enter graduate programs with bachelor's degrees in everything from sociology and psychology to social justice and pre-law. 

Does a social worker need a license?

You need a license to officially work as a social worker. In order to receive a license from your state or province, you must both earn a master's degree from an accredited program and pass a licensing exam, often called a state board exam. 

Upon graduation from an accredited master's program, social workers need to pass the ASWB LCSW exam or the Association of Social Work Boards Licensed Clinical Social Worker exam. This licensing exam is often referred to as the ASWB exam or the LCSW exam. This exam is similar to state board exams required of nurses and other medical professionals. 

Can you work as a social worker without a license?

While you can work without passing the ASWB exam, you will be limited in the scope of what you can and will need to work directly under a social worker that has passed the exam and earned licensure. 

What other certifications can a social worker earn?

In addition to the ASWB exam, social workers can earn advanced certification in key areas, like substance abuse, gerontology, and palliative care. They can also earn LICSW licensure upon passing the LICSW exam, or Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, which allows them to diagnose and treat mental health issues.
